We are pleased to announce HxS’ solo exhibition "Softvinyl Kaiju Exhibition 2021" at MEGUMI OGITA GALLERY. HxS is a softvinyl kaiju creator who designs, moulds and paints his figures all on his own. Softvinyl is made by pouring the raw material called sol into a mould, then baking and extracting it. Although the process has remained largely the same from early Showa era (1926–1989) to the present day, he is constantly striving to improve his works by experimenting with different techniques.
When HxS took over the factory, he wanted to bring back the original softvinyl Kong, which his father made 30 years ago, in standard size. That's how the world of Gorilla Ju was born. Since then, he has continued to create his own original kaiju to fight against it, such as Mecha Gorilla Ju and Tyranno Ju, in line with his own stories.
The perfection of HxS' works by his craftsmanship is noteworthy, but it is not what the modern multi-coloured works, with their emphasis on realism, are aiming for. In fact, his works are more like the good old softvinyl kaiju that you can pick up and play with as a child. The kaiju have got fierce appearances, but they are also nicely deformed with lovable expressions.
HxS also asks illustrators, tattoo artists and painters to help him expand his own world. The original paintings for HxS, created by a famous Japanese illustrator Masami Watanabe, who would draw illustrations for plastic model boxes in Showa era, are the quintessence of his works.
The exhibition will feature 30 figures including five new ones, and five 2D works. We hope you look forward to the exhibition by HxS, who has established a definitive position in the softvinyl world for decades.
